Real Estate: Finding Your Home in an Emergency

Address or House Numbers.....something most of us don't give much thought to, but they can be very important in an emergency. Older housing tracts don't always have sequential numbering....in fact the house next door to me is 1135 while I am at 1159 and across the Street is 1146.  Imagine if you were trying to locate a particular address by today's standard....all odd on one side, and all even on the other side in sequential order. That's easy, but older housing tracks, or rural areas often times are different. In an emergency it's important to have Clear Reflective House Numbers

Some places require the Address's House Number to be displayed on the Mailbox with Reflective Numbers.

Hi Kathy, It has been a very long time. How are you? This is a clever post and a very useful one. Hope some of the neighborhoods I work in read it, lol. I went to a house and asked, are you XXXX any street and the lady that answered said, " No, I am Sarah, you must be looking for Anna, but she and her husband just split , that may be why you can't find her ". LMAO. People love to help , don't they.

Hi William...yes it has been a long time, I am quite well thank you ;)  One of my neighbors infant child had a medical emergency and if 911 only has an address.....well, we can only pray that the Address is easy to find!

Your story is cute, and yes in some neighborhoods people love to help, in others you couldn't have found Anna any more than trying to find that illusive pot of Gold :)

Hi Kathy, something most of us don't think about, but so important.  It's especially important in our area, because we have no street lights, and are not allowed to leave porch lights on at night - so it is really difficult to find homes in an emergency.  I have been putting off getting the $25. reflective sign from the Association - thanks for the reminder!

Kathy - This is something that is always on my mind when I am showing property and have a hard time finding it due to the address missing from a home.  I realize if I am having a hard time so would the rescue squad. I am such a saftey nut.

The boy scouts in the area were fund raising by painting house numbers.

Kathy - nice reminder for people to check their house numbers. Our county recently had address changes for our new 911 system so many of the house numbers are out of date or non-existant.

There is a lime green house in a town nearby... I used to wonder why anyone would paint their house that color!  Then someone told me that the lady that lived there was always getting lost.  Now she can tell the policeman that she lives in the green house and he will know which one it is.

You also need to be careful, we had many people a few years ago going around house to house offering to paint the numbers on the sidewalk like you got pictured and then the city sent them a fine because that is illegal. Got to love government, something designed to help them is illegal.

Great post. This comes up so often as I visit homes. Even when I don't take the listing, I give the advice to spruce up their numbers for safety reasons. Am going to "re-blog." Thank you!

Ann....oops it is set now :)  And Rural areas really need help in locating houses.  I have even heard that some people put their house number on the roof also :)
